Hob.I:85 Symphony in B-Flat Major La Reine”
The memory of Marie Antoinette is explicitly linked to the sobriquet of Symphony No. 85, which is said to have been held in particularly high esteem by the French queen. This work, which Haydn actually intended to be the second of the sequence of six, is a clear tribute to the French audience: the slow introduction of the first movement is composed in the character of a French overture with its solemn dotted rhythms; the ornamental variations of the movement are based on the theme of the French folksong La gentile et jeune Lisette. Haydn’s superior mastery of composition is demonstrated behind this facade of open compliments of French taste: the first movement is developed almost entirely out of a single theme, a succession of quarter notes (in the transitional phase of the exposition derived from this Haydn curiously paraphrases the beginning of his famous Farewell Symphony); the final movement is a highly elaborate cross between the rondo and sonata movement forms (the middle episode functions as the “development”).
